Google Sued Over Android-Based Phones

08-13-2010 [Ben Hanrahan] [Permalink]

Oracle, one of the world's leading technology companies, acquired Sun Microsystems, Inc. earlier this year, and in doing so, now holds rights in the Java Platform as well as related patents and copyrights.  With their newly acquired intellectual property, Oracle filed suit against Google in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California alleging that Google's Android operating system that it distributes with certain cellular telehones infringes seven of Oracle's patents as well as its copyrights.

In the Complaint, Oracle alleges that Google was aware of the patent portfolio "since the middle of this decade" when Google apparently hired former Sun Java engineers.  Although too early to tell, it will be interesting to see if these allegations of patent and copyright infringement will stall the success Andriod-based phones have seen in the market recently.
