Foursquare Labs, the provider of a popular mobile check-in service, was recently hit with its first patent infringement lawsuit by a company called Mobile Commerce Framework (MCF). According to MCF's complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, Foursquare has created and distributes mobile software applications used to obtain merchant information and offers by searching based on the merchant location and type. The complaint alleges that Foursquare's mobile application products infringe United States Patent No. 7,693,752, owned by MCF. The '752 patent describes A subscription-Based method for presenting merchant information to a mobile device involving a search for a merchant type within a geographical area.
